How to Spot a Liar at the Poker Table

Do you think you could tell if someone is lying to you? From hand gestures, licking lips and even looking to the right, there are key signs to look out for when spotting a liar. And if you can spot a liar, you may also be able to call someone’s bluff, too.

We know that our most skilled poker players are excellent bluffers, and we conducted this research to provide key insight to our players on identifying top signs of lying from a body language perspective. This might just help them call their opponent’s bluff – which is sure to make future games more interesting!

We’ve worked with leading body language expert Mike Carter to reveal the ten key signs of lying and created a quiz-style video so you can put your newfound knowledge to the test. If you’re looking to spot a liar in their tracks, you should know what you’re supposed to be looking out for. We’ve worked with a top body language expert to reveal ten of the most noticeable signs of lying, which you can see above.

Expanding the top three signs a little further, if someone is looking to the right when talking to you, take this as a major red flag. Liars look to the right to subconsciously access the right-hand side of their brain – the imagination – and not the left-hand side, which is memory. So, if someone is frequently looking to the right, they could be lying to you.

Excessive blinking or licking or touching their lips also signals that a person is uncomfortable, and is taking some extra time to think about an answer before responding. So again, this could be a key sign to look out for when spotting a lie.
